TV5 Time Capsules

UPDATE:  Local News Volume 2 airs May 24

In celebration of 60 Years of Great TV, Maine's First Television Station, WABI-TV, presents a series of retrospective half-hour specials, featuring historical clips from the station's film and tape archives dating back to the early 1950's.

On Friday, May 24, 2013, at 7:30pm on WABI-TV5 (CBS), we present a TV5 Time Capsule: Local News Volume 2.

The news program features clips of some of the many stories and events we've covered over six decades, with reports and profiles from communities throughout our coverage area, as well as interviews with political leaders and celebrities, and "man on the street" opinion pieces.   Some of the featured clips:  The inauguration of ferry service between Nova Scotia and Maine on the Blue Nose; A 1960's Maine Broiler Festival in Belfast; Maine Jaycees' 1960's parade in Bangor; actor William Shatner in Skowhegan in 1970; the Inauguration of James Longley as Maine's independent governor; and then First Lady Hillary Clinton's visit to the University of Maine in Orono in 1994.  And - of course - "much more!"

On Sunday, June 2, 2013, at 10:00am on WABI-DT2 (CW), we present a rebroadcast of TV5 Time Capsule: Local Sports Volume 1 & 2.

The sports shows feature excerpts from some of the live events we've covered, as well as interviews and profiles that were produced for our newscasts, including film of a NFL Football exhibition game between the NY Giants and the Green Bay Packers, played at Garland Street Field in Bangor in 1959; A 1964 interview with Boston Celtic legend Bob Cousy who was visiting Maine; segments from a 1966 special, "Meet the Bears." which profiled the University of Maine football team; Segments from a rare filmed episode of "Outdoors with Bud Leavitt" - on location at East Grand Lake; Clips of teams from the University of Maine and Colby College, and high school basketball, football, and baseball games featuring teams throughout our coverage area from Millinocket to Rockland, and Farmington to Orono.

A Time Capsule focused on local commercials is planned for the fall.
